Cardinal Bernardin School Raises $3,100 for Local Charity

Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School raised $3,100 during Catholic Schools Week for local charity, Sleep in Heavenly Peace-Oak Forest.

Making an impact on the lives of children in need is wonderful, but when children can help other children, that feeling is even better. During Catholic Schools Week (January 31- February 4, 2022) students at Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School (Orland Hills) raised $3,100.38 for the Sleep in Heavenly Peace-Oak Forest Chapter (SHP), which builds beds for children who are sleeping on the floor. Their motto is, “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town.”

CJB Student Council conducted Penny Wars between all of the grades, and students were encouraged to bring in coins. CJB students greatly exceeded their goal of raising $1,500, and because they did, Ms. Bourrell (Principal) and Mrs. Pagliaro (Assistant Principal) accepted a student challenge to be named at a later date.
Adrian Kurzweil, sixth grade teacher and Student Council Moderator, says, “It’s a powerful thing to see kids giving back to other kids in such a profound way. Kicking this drive off with showing the students who their coin donations would be going to really helped the students see the impact they could have on other kids who have to worry nightly about getting adequate rest due to circumstances that lead them to not having a bed to call their own. Raising more money than we ever have through this competition is great, but knowing that it is going to an organization that does so many amazing things for the local community is even more meaningful.”
Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Catholic School, twice-recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence (2008 and 2018), is now accepting registrations for the 2022-23 school year. CJB is celebrating its 21st year and is committed to providing a top-rated academic experience as well as a safe learning environment centered in faith. CJB is a regional school sponsored by four parishes (St. Elizabeth Ann Seton - Orland Hills, St. Francis of Assisi - Orland Park, St. Stephen Deacon and Martyr - Tinley Park, and St. Julie Billiart - Tinley Park.) CJB welcomes students in 3-year old PreK through 8th grade with a focus on developing each student’s spiritual, intellectual, emotional, creative, physical, and social needs. CJB will be hosting an open house with private tours on April 2, 2022 from 9-1:00. Pre-registration is required.
