Following the fatalities and massive damage caused by weather last weekend, Cook County officials are reminding residents of the importance of good planning and asking them to get involved in a comprehensive plan to prepare for natural disasters.
Michael Masters, the executive director of the Cook County Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, said in a Patch blog post that while Cook County escaped severe damage last weekend, "we are not always so fortunate."

The department is developing a comprehensive plan to prepare for natural disasters and is hosting a series of public meetings in December to share the progress with residents. The first meeting is at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9 at Homewood Village Hall, 2020 Chestnut Rd. in Homewood.
A public survey has also been created to gather information regarding natural hazards in Cook County.
