DISTRICT 135 COMMUNITY CALL TO ACTION

The Orland School District 135 Board of Education urges Orland Park and area residents to file their opposition against Senate Bill 16.

The Orland School District 135 Board of Education urges Orland Park and southwest suburban area residents to file their opposition against Senate Bill 16 by November 17, 2014.


“This legislation affects the entire State of Illinois and school districts in the Orland Park area stand to lose millions of dollars if it passes,” said District 135 Board President Joe La Margo. “We call on everyone to let their voices be heard that the residents of our area are opposed to Senate Bill 16,” he said.
The Bill will be discussed at a hearing by the Appropriations-Elementary & Secondary Education Committee on November 18, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. in Springfield, Illinois.


IMMEDIATE CALL TO ACTION

During the November 18th legislative hearing, the committee chairman commonly reads the list of witnesses that have filed slips for or against the proposal. These are known as “Witness Slips.”

Senate Bill 16 is a School Funding Reform Act proposing a new education funding formula. If this bill passes, Orland School District 135 will lose approximately $5 million in revenue alone with the southwest Cook County at risk of losing almost $26 million in revenue.

“We encourage everyone in the region to go online to add their opposition to the change in the education funding formula,” said District 135 Superintendent Dr. Janet Stutz.

La Margo added, “Every child in the State of Illinois should have access to an outstanding education --- but not at the expense of others. The legislature needs to come up with a different way to fix the problem.”
