Do You Think Illinois Lawmakers Deserve These Salaries?

You would think our lawmakers are doing a superb job legislating based on how much they’re paid, especially when compared to other states.

Illinois taxpayers shell out more than $12 million a year for legislators’ salaries; unfortunately, taxpayers are not getting their money’s worth. The state faces seemingly insurmountable challenges due to decades of poor policymaking, among other reasons. But then again, politicians still need to make a living just like the rest of us, right?

Take a look at the average salary for Illinois lawmakers and how it stacks up to our Midwestern neighbors and the rest of the nation. Keep in mind this does not include additional compensation for serving on committees, so try to keep your cool.

Let’s hope the newly-inaugurated 99th General Assembly’s promises of bipartisanship and effective legislation to fix the state’s problems are genuine.
