Empowering Voices: Andrew High School Alum Mohammed Mustafa Demonstrates Speech Innovation

For millions living with a stutter, everyday communication - from giving a class presentation to introducing oneself - can feel like an uphill battle. Andrew High School alumnus Mohammed Mustafa, founder of Unisn Labs, recently returned to his roots to demonstrate his speech-support technology to a small group of current speech students and staff, showing them firsthand how innovation driven by lived experience can transform communication.

Mohammed spent over a decade navigating speech therapy, trying various techniques, apps, and strategies to manage his stutter. Recognizing that traditional methods don't always provide real-time support in high-pressure moments, he turned to a well-researched phenomenon known as choral speech (or unison speech) - the tendency for individuals who stutter to speak with significantly greater fluency when speaking in unison with another voice.

Driven by a desire to make this support accessible anywhere, Mohammed founded Unisn Labs. The platform leverages synchronized audio guides and teleprompter-style visual cues to help users practice and navigate real-life speaking scenarios with greater ease.

“Unisn Labs is the platform I wish I had growing up. My goal is to improve the quality of life for people who stutter by allowing them to do the small things in life that most people overlook,” remarked Mohammed. “Things like asking a question in class, ordering at a drive through instead of a kiosk, giving a presentation, or even just telling a story to friends. People who stutter deserve to be heard and they should not have to lose out on opportunities because of their speech."
