Former MLB Player Tapped As New Marist Baseball Coach

Kevin Sefcik brings college and professional experience as player and coach to the table, including stints with Phillies and Rockies.

Marist High School has given the nod to a former Major League Baseballplayer to become the new head baseball coach, the school announced.

Kevin Sefcik, who played 10 years in the MLB, is only the fourth head coach of the school’s baseball program in Marist’s 50-year history.

Sefcik brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to the post. A 1989 graduate of Andrew High School in Tinley Park, he continued his playing career at Saint Xavier University. While at St. Xavier, Sefcik was All-CCAC (1990-92), All-State District 20 (1991-93), All-Area (1991-92), and an NAIA All-American (1992).

He was drafted in 1993 to the MLB by the Philadelphia Phillies. Sefcik played professional ball for 10 years, including stints with the Philadelphia Phillies and Colorado Rockies, where he covered the outfield and second base.

Sefcik has been an assistant coach at St. Xavier University (2005) and Brother Rice High School (2012-14). Most recently, he has been the director of baseball operations for the Illinois Sparks Baseball Club in Orland Park, the school said in a news release.

Sefcik says he’s eager to start working with players and coaches at Marist and looks forward to the upcoming season.

“I am very excited to get my first head coaching job,” Sefcik said. “I want to thank Marist High School for this opportunity. I want this program to be considered the best place to learn the game both physically and mentally. If we accomplish those two areas the wins will come.”

In addition to his coaching duties, Sefcik will be an instructor in the physical education department at Marist. Marist is a member of the East Suburban Catholic Conference, and last season the team advanced to the regional championship.
