GSU Men's Basketball Team Plays Very First Exhibition Game Thursday

A new era of college sports begins for Governors State University.

The new Governors State athletics program makes its debut Thursday, Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. with an exhibition basketball matchup against Trinity International University in the GSU gymnasium.

“Our fans should expect high tempo full court explosive basketball for 40 minutes,” said Athletic Director and Men’s Basketball Coach Tony Bates.

The men’s basketball exhibition game also kicks off the GSU Family & Friends Weekend, starting at 3 p.m. with a pep rally in the GSU Hall of Governors.

“We’re recommending that fans come directly from the rally since space is limited to 500 in our gymnasium,” added Coach Bates.

If fans can’t make it on Thursday, the men’s team has a quick turn-around and is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m. against Loyola University’s Ramblers Club Team in the GSU gymnasium.

The GSU Women’s Basketball team debuts on Saturday, Oct. 18, against a team of standout players from some of Chicago’s leading programs.

“We’re excited about going up against some great basketball athletes – and show them what the GSU Jaguars are all about,” said La Toshia Burrell, head coach of the GSU Women’s Basketball team.

Governors State University was founded in 1969 as an upper division university. Today, as a four-year university, more than 5,500 undergraduate and graduate students choose from 64 degree and 24 certificate programs that prepare them for success in business, industry, healthcare, the arts and education.
