Man Charged After Stealing Gun from Unlocked Car: Prosecutors

"I should put you in Cook County for the weekend ... they'd pass you around like a little doll," judge tells defendant.

A Crestwood man appeared before a Cook County judge on charges that he had burglarized a car in Orland Park.

Prosecutors said that Joseph DeFrancisco, 18, stole a gun, mini iPod and a pair of sunglasses from unlocked vehicle on June 1.

All of the stolen property was recovered, including the gun.

The public defender said that DeFrancisco is a graduate from Sandburg High School in Orland Park, but now lives with his father in Crestwood. He had no prior criminal record.

Told he could go the penitentiary, Cook County Judge Peter Felice asked DeFrancisco if his father didn’t provide clothing and food for him.

“I should put you in Cook County for the weekend so you have a taste of what it’s like. You wouldn’t know how to handle it,” Judge Felice said. “You wouldn’t like the people in there. They’d pass you around like a little doll.”

The judge released DeFrancisco on a $25,000 I-bond. He also put him on electronic monitoring and random urine drops.

“You’re going to stay home,” the judge told him.

DeFrancisco’s next court date is July 7.
