ORLAND PARK, IL -- A Frankfort man is accused of robbing an Orland Park electronics and gaming store with a pellet gun, and then taking off with an iPhone, prosecutors said. Lance Payne, 26, appeared before Cook County Judge Donald Havis on a felony charge of aggravated robbery. The judge also noted that Payne is currently on supervision for retail theft in Will County.

Around 10 a.m. May 27, the prosecutor said Payne entered Disc Replay, 15014 S. LaGrange Road. Payne asked the sales associate to show him an iPhone. The employee locked the phone and set it on the counter. Payne allegedly picked up the phone and began to walk away. When the employee tried to confront him, the prosecutor said that Payne pointed what appeared to be a gun and ran out of the store.

An hour later, employees at Disc Replay received a call from a GameStop store in Matteson. The GameStop employees alleged that Payne tried to sell the phone. A message appeared on the phone’s screen indicating that it had been reported stolen, the prosecutor said.

Matteson police were notified and took Payne into custody. The prosecutor said that a pellet gun was found inside of Payne’s vehicle. Employees from the Orland Park store identified Payne in a lineup as the man who allegedly robbed Disc Replay. Police said that Payne admitted to robbing the store because he needed money to get back to California where he was a job working for Federal Express.

Payne’s attorney told the judge that his client is a graduate of Lincoln Way North High School. He was working to save money to take the real estate license exam and to purchase a home. As for the retail theft charge in Will County, the attorney said that Payne has to pay some remaining court fees.
