Orland 135 Plans for Full-Day Kindergarten

A school would need to expand to add kindergarten classes, officials say.

Orland School District 135 is planning ahead for full-day kindergarten in the 2016-17 school year at one of its schools. Doing so will require the construction of 22 to 26 new classrooms at a cost of about $4 million, according to Supt. Janet Stutz. The board of education on Monday approved a plan for optional full-day kindergarten, reports Tribune Media. The program would be installed at either Park or Centennial schools. Stutz favors Park School due to its central location. Expanding kindergarten at both schools is not an option because that would be too costly. In a district survey, 86 percent of 860 respondents said they would like a full-day kindergarten option.
