Orland Hills Slotted for Water Main Replacement
Construction is expected to begin in September.

Illinois American Water’s Chicago Metro District is investing about $3.7 million to replace 11,000 feet of water main in Orland Hills. This work will enhance and maintain reliable, quality water service to customers while also supporting critical fire protection for public safety, according to a release.
Illinois American Water’s main replacement program focuses on replacing mains where leaks occur, corrosion has caused damage or the size of the pipe isn’t sufficient. “The age of the pipes coupled with deterioration over the years make the project necessary,” said Mike Smyth, senior operations manager for the Chicago Metro District.
The pipe replacement projects will take place in Orland Hills along Hobart Avenue, 93rd Avenue, 92nd Avenue, 91st Avenue, Hilltop Avenue and 90th Avenue between 167th Street and 169th Place; and on 169th Place between 94th Avenue and 90th Avenue. Customers residing near the construction area were sent pertinent information about the projects. The main replacements are expected to be completed this September.

“Some of water main being replaced is over 50-years-old. These projects benefit our customers as a whole because they help to reduce main breaks and related traffic and service impact. I want to thank our customers for their patience as our teams work in their neighborhoods,” said Smyth.
The U.S. EPA reports that the nation’s water utilities will need to make more than $335 billion in infrastructure investments over the next 20 years to ensure public health. These investments include replacing thousands of miles of pipe and upgrades to treatment plants, storage tanks and other assets. Illinois American Water’s investment in main replacement in the Chicago Metro District is just another example of continuous investments and improvements being made, helping to meet the demands of today’s customers and planning for the future.
