Orland Park police are seeking to extradite a fugitive from the Winnebago County Jail to face pending felony theft charges after the fugitive scammed a $9,000 ring out of a jewelry store, police said.

An employee of James and Son Fine Jewelers, 15234 S. LaGrange Road, Orland Park, told police that a man named Carl Mack, 30, came into the store on Dec. 23 to buy jewelry, a detective testified in court.

According to court testimony, after making his selection, Mack presented a Master debit card to pay for the ring. When the first attempt to swipe the card was denied, Mack allegedly told the employee that the debit card was from his business.

Mack instructed the employee to enter the card’s security code and press “F” for a forced override. The card was accepted, and Mack walked out of the store with the fine jewelry, the detective said.

On Jan. 6, the store received a notice from Mack’s bank stating that the card was not good. Orland Park police were back in court on Tuesday, asking for a court order for a Chicago pawn shop to release a Rolex watch valued at $32,000.

According to the detective, Mack received a $17,000 loan on the Rolex. Orland Park police said they expected to execute the arrest warrant next week.

Mack is currently being held in Winnebago on obstruction of justice and destroying evidence charges, jail records said.

The detective said he didn’t think Mack was going to “pay juice” on the loan.
