Orland Park Resident Saves Neighbor's Home From Burning Down

Orland Fire Protection District arrived just in time to put out fire near garage before it spread to the house, thanks to neighbor's call.

ORLAND PARK, IL -- An alert neighbor called 911 to report a smoke and flames outside another neighbor’s home Friday in Orland Park. No injuries were reported. The family was not home at the time of the fire, officials said.

Fire crews were alerted during the evening hours of Friday, June 15, on Jillian Road. When the Orland Fire Protection District, smoke was billowing from a fire near near the garage. Firefighters were able to stop the blaze just in time before it spread to the house.

The fire was confined to the attached garage and it was extinguished within 15 minutes. Light smoke damage was noted inside the home.

Orland Fire Protection District Fire Chief Michael Schofield said the fire caused far more property damage had not the neighbor called the fire department.

“The public is indebted to the neighbor who called 911 to report the fire,” Scholfield said. “The fire could easily have spread from the garage area to the home causing far more serious damage and even destroying it … It made a difference in this case.”

OFPD officials said the fire appeared to have originated outside the garage consuming debris from a floor refinishing project. That cause of the fire is under investigation. Orland Fire was assisted on scene by Tinley Park and Frankfort fire departments ire with several other area fire departments covering Orland Fire stations.
