On September 12, 2024, two schools within Orland School District 135 welcomed Dr. Monika Skura, a professor from the University of Warsaw, Poland, and Dr. Patricia Graczyk, a professor from the University of Illinois, Chicago. The professors visited Centennial Elementary and Liberty Elementary to observe the district's implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).

Orland 135 has been recognized as a model district for PBIS and was recommended to showcase the PBIS systems and framework, making it an ideal location for Dr. Skura to learn more about the framework. She is currently working to introduce PBIS to the education system in Poland.
During their visit, the professors met with Mrs. Hayden and Mrs. McCullough, principal and assistant principal at Centennial, Mrs. Beeler and Mr. Hawrysio, principal and assistant principal at Liberty, PBIS teacher leaders, and students at both schools to learn about PBIS practices. They toured the schools, observed classrooms, and participated in discussions about the program's effectiveness.

One of the day's highlights was the classroom visits where students showcased their understanding of the PBIS expectations. At Centennial Elementary, students shared their "Paw Pride Cheer" and discussed the importance of being safe, respectful, and responsible. At Liberty Elementary, students demonstrated their use of classroom circle time to share their feelings and strategies for coping with difficult emotions.

The PBIS teams at both schools discussed how PBIS has helped strengthen the community feel at their school. They shared examples of how they use positive reinforcements and celebrations to encourage positive behavior. They also discussed their tiered system of support, which provides interventions at different levels to address the needs of all students. They shared the importance of clear expectations and communication systems, as well as the use of data to inform decision-making.

Sean Lyons, 5th grade teacher and a member of the Liberty PBIS team, stated “PBIS is more than a positive, cheerleading program. It is using data to support all students be successful and ready to learn in every classroom. This is a proactive approach to helping kids.”
