The new JJH vice principal, Ms. Fredin, has been thinking a lot about the books that shaped her when she was in junior high. Ms. Fredin knows how important it is for students to connect with stories that touch on friendship, courage, and figuring out who we are.

One book Ms. Fredin really loves is “Island of the Blue Dolphins” by Scott O'Dell which tells the story of a girl named Karana who ends up alone on an island after her tribe leaves. Island of the Blue Dolphins shows how Karana learns to survive on her own, connects with nature, and searches for her identity. Ms. Fredin thinks it’s a powerful story about strength and finding yourself.
Another favorite book of Mrs. Fredin is “Bridge to Terabithia” by Katherine Paterson which is about two kids, Jess and Leslie, who create a magical kingdom to escape their everyday problems. Through their friendship, the book talks about dealing with bullying, loss, and the power of imagination. Ms, Fredin says“ I've enjoyed seeing a lots of, interaction in the classrooms and the kids reading at all different levels”.
Mrs. Fredin is also excited to share her love for the book “Far From the Tree” by Robin Benway. which is about three siblings who were separated at birth and the challenges they face as they try to understand family, identity, and belonging.. Ms. Fredin feels that this story touches on important issues that many kids can relate to.
If Ms. Fredin could invite any fictional character to speak at our school, she would choose Harry Potter. Harry’s journey through challenges at Hogwarts makes him a great role model for all of us. Ms. Fredin thinks he could talk to us about friendship, resilience, and how to handle conflicts. Ms. Fredin believes that hearing from Harry would inspire students to face their own challenges with courage and empathy.
Overall, Ms. Fredin’s love for these stories shows how books can connect us, no matter our age!
