Sandburg HIgh School’s Scholastic Bowl is an academic team competition. It is usually described as team jeopardy by those who compete. The students show their ability in Math, English, Social Studies, Science and the Arts. The team has both specialists in one or two categories and generalists who have a wide variety of knowledge.
The Carl Sandburg Scholastic Bowl team is led by one of the tallest coaches in the state of Illinois, 6’9” Mr. Woolley. In the past two years the team has won two Regional titles and has placed 2nd and 3rd at the Sectional (State qualifying) meet. The team is one of the largest in the area and we encourage anyone willing to learn to compete.
This year, so far the JV team is 9-0 in Conference and is favored to win their third consecutive Conference Championship. The Varsity is 8-1 and will go down to the wire again with the other best team in the region. The team has already attended six Saturday tournaments this year which is a record for the team. One was an overnight tournament at the University of Illinois and at the Fenwick kickoff tournament we came away with first place. This was the first tournament championship ever for the team.

This year’s team is led by Helena Shaheen and Yaseen Mozaffar who co-captain the varsity. The JV team is very ably led by Claudia Danowski and Seth Blithstein. The team’s goal is to qualify for State (only eight teams qualify) within the next three years.
