Section of 159th Street to Close August 19

Traffic in both directions will be blocked from 104th to 108th Avenue.

A stretch of 159th Street will be closed beginning August 19, for work needed on a railroad crossing as part of the road’s widening.

The road will be closed from 104th Avenue to 108th Avenue. The closure is expected to last 10 days, according to IDOT. Drivers will be detoured to 167th Street between 104th Avenue and 108th Avenue.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is widening 159th Street to two lanes each direction, from Ravinia Avenue in Orland Park to Gougar Road in Homer Glen, which requires updates to the railroad crossing at the Metra tracks on the SouthWest Service Line, the agencies said in a statement.

The $105 million project will create two 12-foot-wide lanes in each direction, separated by a raised, curbed median, and will also include a multi-use path and sidewalk, according to IDOT. Expected completion date is the fall of 2017.
