Student voice valued, widespread at District 230 schools

Sandburg Student Council influences, informs

The days of teachers lecturing and students passively receiving information are long gone. Schools and students’ education intertwine with student voice as a key to unlocking the full potential of the high school journey. Today, schools have evolved into a dynamic dialogue where students are not just audience members but advocates for their own learning.

One of Consolidated High School District 230’s Strategic Framework goals is to enhance student voice by encouraging students to work with peers and school personnel to expand cultural responsiveness and increase participation of students with varied backgrounds and interests in co-curricular programs.

One of the best examples of the Strategic Framework in action is the Student Council Executive Board at Carl Sandburg High School.

Administrators, Student Council sponsors and the Student Council Executive Board meet on a monthly basis to engage in planning related to school efforts, events, and initiatives. Students use their "voices" to influence and inform school improvement and planning. Additionally, the Student Council co-curricular represents a large group that reflects the varied backgrounds and experiences of Sandburg students.

Principal Derrick Smith said that monthly meetings between administrators and Student Council are an excellent way to partner, collaborate and to make Sandburg an even better place.
