Summer classes and more for adults offered at Orland Park Library

Attend a concert, book discussion or Civil War program for adults at the Orland Park Public Library in July.

The Orland Park Public Library will offers a variety of fun, entertaining, and educational programs for adults in July. All programs are free. Registration and OPPL card may be required for some programs. For more information, call 708-428-5100 or visit www.orlandparklibrary.org.

Food & School Supply Drive

The Orland Park Public Library’s teen group, Teen Inc., sponsors its 15th annual School Supply & Food Drive at the library this summer. Donations are accepted through August 8 and donated to Orland Township to benefit local families in need. Examples of needed items include canned goods, cereal, diapers and pet food. Read to the Rhythm: Summer Reading Challenge for kids, teens, adults and families

Summer Concert Series: Moraine Valley Community College Jazz Band

Sunday, July 12 at 2 p.m.

Moraine Valley’s Jazz Band performs a wide range of styles outdoors on the plaza including swing, soulful blues, Latin-jazz, and gritty funk. Bring your own chairs. May be moved indoors in bad weather.

Life and Limb: The Toll of the American Civil War

July 6-August 15

Exhibition and Programs

More than 3 million soldiers fought in the Civil War and 500,000 died. Several hundred thousand men were permanently disabled by battlefield injuries or surgery which saved lives by sacrificing limbs. Display located on the library’s second floor.

Civil War Field Embalming: Demo of Period Technique

Tuesday, July 14 at 7 p.m.

Portraying a surgeon from the 19th century, Jon Austin presents a medical school lecture on embalming using a Civil War re-enactor as a visual aid.

Civil War Surgeon General Dr. William Hammond

Tuesday, July 21 at 7 p.m.

R.J. Lindsey portrays Hammond as he enlightens on improvements in military medicine including the ambulance corps, infection control, and anesthetic use for major surgery.

Excavating Camp Douglas: A Chicago Civil War Prison Camp

Thursday, July 23 at 7 p.m.

Camp Douglas Restoration Foundation’s David Keller presents history and stories from camp diaries and journals of Confederate prisoners. Learn about camp conditions, loss of life, current site status, and work done by the Foundation.

Exhibition was developed and produced by the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health. Programs are presented in cooperation with Orland Park Public Library, the Illinois Humanities Council, and South Suburban Archaeological Society in celebration of the National Library of Medicine’s traveling exhibition.
