Think Outside the Crayon Box: A Great Escape

Monkey Mind Art Studio is offering classes to all skill levels.

If art appreciation comes in the form of coloring books and finger paints, it may be time to get in touch with your artistic side.

The is offering ongoing adult drawing and painting classes every Tuesday and Wednesday.

"We believe everybody is born creative," said Patty McWilliams, studio owner and instructor. "We love to see people become kids again, just pick up the paints and go with it."

Classes are open to all skill levels. McWilliams says she offers as much or as little instruction as necessary and is often content to do "what they want to do."

Many of her students begin with paints but realize they need to brush up on drawing techniques before painting. As the days get warmer, McWilliams anticipates spending more time outdoors with her students, exploring nature through a variety of mediums, including pencil, watercolors and acrylics.

Students also are welcome to bring their own projects. All judgment is thrown aside and artists are encouraged to work without inhibition. There's no critiquing.

McWilliams, whose specialty is in plaster, offers belly casting to moms-to-be and employs several fine art instructors who are able to share their areas of expertise.

The studio is available to groups, by appointment, making it perfect for a girls-night-out event. Wednesday morning classes are more of a "drop-in environment" where artists are welcome to come and go. Tuesday night classes are by appointment only.

In addition to art exhibition and classes, the studio offers yoga, meditation and Pilates instruction.

"I always try to remind moms to do something for themselves," McWilliams said. "We do a lot of things here that women tend to tap into."
