Three District 230 teachers earn Those Who Excel Awards

Illinois State Board of Education honors individuals who have made significant contributions schools

Two Andrew High School teachers and a Sandburg High School teacher will be honored by the Illinois State Board of Education with Those ​Who Excel awards that honor individuals who have made significant contributions to our state’s public and nonpublic elementary and secondary schools.

The District 230 School Board recognized these educators at its meeting on Thursday night and the Illinois State Board of Education will hold a reception on October 17 in Bloomington, Illinois to honor educators from throughout the state.​

Diana Hanania, Andrew High School

Special Education teacher Andrew H​i​gh School’s Diana Hanania will be recognized with a Those Who Excel award ​in the Early Career ​category. ​

“Diana’s passion for teaching is evident as soon as you step foot into her classroom,” wrote colleague Chris Spiel in the nomination. “She makes it a point to show genuine interest in both their personal and academic lives. While teaching, Diana not only creates lessons that are highly motivating and engaging, but she also does an outstanding job with differentiating classroom assignments for students with special needs.”

In addition to teaching, Diana serves as co-sponsor of the Project Diversity club that promotes cultural awareness and acceptance of diverse populations

Courtney Stoub, Andrew High School

Andrew High School PE/Health Teacher Courtney Stoub ​will receive the award in the Classroom Teacher category.

“As a teacher, Mrs. Stoub is a dedicated, ambitious and responsible educator that I simply loved seeing everyday,” wrote recent graduate Brooke Burns in the nomination. “Good teachers can inspire students to want to learn for the sake of learning, not just to get a good grade; and that is what Mrs. Stoub does.”

Fred Peronto, Sandburg High School
Sandburg High School Social Studies Teacher Fred Peronto will also receive the award in the Classroom Teacher category.

“Mr. Peronto possess a deep conviction that the student’s need is always primary,” wrote Principal Deb Baker in the nomination. “Because he is established as a trusted voice, he has positively influence Sandburg High School by challenging our thinking about grading, about assessment, and about learning activities that not only enrich the instructional environment but also resonate with students and staff as a lens through which we understand what it means to be human.”
