Why Do They Keep Tearing Down Orland Park?

For generations, Orland Park has been a community defined by strong neighborhoods, excellent schools, safe streets, shared sense of pride and a vibrant business climate. Residents see it every day in their parks, local businesses, places of worship, and community events. It is why families choose to stay, and why others continue to move here.

Yet if someone were to rely solely on certain social media posts and blogs, they might come away with a vastly different impression, one that suggests decline, dysfunction and instability. That narrative is not only inaccurate; it is deliberate disinformation meant to damage Orland Park. Our collective concern is that it is being repeated so often that it risks taking hold.

At the center of this messaging is former mayor Keith Pekau, who was voted out of office by a historic margin. Rather than stepping away, he has remained highly active on social media frequently amplifying criticism and his negative interpretations of nearly every Village action.

What has emerged is not isolated criticism, but a consistent pattern.

Public comments at Board meetings, social media and blog posts increasingly echo the same themes, questioning schools, the library, Village staff, local businesses, and even public safety. Nearly every decision or accomplishment is reframed to sow doubt and cast dispersion simply because Pekau and his supporters have not yet adjusted to the fact they lost a fairly contested election.

The most recent examples involve direct attacks on the integrity of the Orland Park Police Department tied to an active criminal investigation as well as public accusations (of the police investigation team) of procedural failures without substantiated evidence, casting unwarranted doubt on their conduct.

Those claims are serious, but the facts tell a different story.

When allegations involving threats and harassment toward elected officials were reported, the Orland Park Police Department referred the matter to an independent outside law enforcement agency to ensure impartiality and eliminate any perception of bias. When a neighboring jurisdiction later became involved, the department confirmed the case had already been transferred. Even the arrest and processing were handled externally in an abundance of caution.

These are not shortcuts or oversights. They are deliberate steps taken to protect transparency, fairness, and public trust.

And yet, even in the face of those facts, the narrative persists.

This is one of many examples we will be bringing to your attention because any one instance on its own may not tell the full story. There are clear and deliberate statements as well as devastating actions being taken by someone whose anger and ego have gotten the best of him. Makes one question if he ever really cared about the town he claimed to represent or if it was always about him and his now failed self-promotion.

But taken together, the pattern is hard to miss.

A steady stream of negativity, repeated often enough, can begin to shape perception. It can overshadow progress, distort reality, and create doubt where none should exist. Consider for a moment the impact on you and your family from these deliberate efforts to damage the reputation of Orland Park. That cannot help your home’s value, and it certainly doesn’t help attract new businesses and development. Does it help recruit the best in terms of police officers to keep you safe? Help attract and keep employees who keep the village running?

Orland Park is not a community in decline. It is a community that continues to invest, grow and serve its residents with care and professionalism.

That is the reality experienced by those who live here.

And it is a reality worth protecting, understanding and, when necessary, defending.
