OSWEGO, IL — Two traffic signals, complete with improved safety features, will be installed in downtown Oswego.

The project kicked off Monday, requiring temporary and intermittent road closures at the Route 34 intersections with Main and Harrison streets. Sidewalks at the affected intersections will also be impacted throughout construction.

Besides new traffic signals, the intersections will feature handicap-accessible pedestrian signals and improved pedestrian ramps, officials said.

Once completed — it's expected by the end of July — all signals on Route 34 from Route 31, near Village Hall, to Route 25 will be electronically interconnected to help improve traffic flow, according to village officials. Railroad warning signals along Route 34 will also communicate with the traffic lights to ensure cars can clear the tracks before a train approaches.

"Drivers and pedestrians are asked to use caution when walking or driving downtown and especially in the work zone," officials said.
