Enforcement Blitz In Oswego To Target Speeding For 1 Day: Police

OSWEGO, IL — Oswego police will participate in a one-day speeding enforcement campaign Wednesday in an effort to reduce speeding on local roads.

The Oswego Police Department is partnering with the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police (ILACP) and more than 300 state, county and local law enforcement agencies for the Illinois Speed Awareness Day campaign.

The goal of the campaign is to address the "drastic increase in speed-related crashes and moving violations," officials said. Speeding is involved in 44.9 percent of all car fatalities, 36.3 percent of all injury crashes and 31.1 percent of all roadway crashes, according to 2023 statistics from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

"Speeding is a choice that puts everyone at risk," police said in a news release. "It reduces the driver's ability to steer safely around other vehicles, increases stopping distance, and can lead to more severe injuries if a crash occurs. We urge drivers to slow down and make the safe choice."

For the Illinois Speed Awareness Day campaign, police will combine educating drivers about the importance of obeying the speed limit with an increased, zero-tolerance enforcement effort, according to a news release.

The effort is part of ILACP's "Speeding Catches Up With You" campaign, which supports IDOT's broader "It's Not a Game" campaign.
