OSWEGO, IL — The Blue Envelope Program has made its debut in Oswego.
The Oswego Police Department is partnering with The Autism Hero Project on the initiative designed to enhance communication and promote safer interactions between police and people who are neurodivergent.
"Our goal is to make every interaction as safe, comfortable, and successful as possible," said Officer Behr Pfizenmaier, who spearheaded the program at department. "The Blue Envelope Program helps officers quickly recognize when someone may communicate differently so we can adjust our approach and better serve them."
Drivers can pick up a blue envelope from police headquarters, 3355 Woolley Road, and use it to store their license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance.
"During a traffic stop, motorists can present the envelope to the officer, alerting them that the driver or occupant may have communication differences and may benefit from additional patience, understanding, and clear communication," police said in a news release.
The Blue Envelope Program was first introduced in Connecticut in 2020 and has since expanded across the country.
To discuss the program, the Oswego Police Department will host an open house from 6-7:30 p.m. Aug. 13. Attendees will have the chance to ask questions and participate in mock traffic stops to understand what to expect if one occurs on the road.
Individuals who may benefit from the program as well as their families, caregivers and supporters are invited to attend.
