OSWEGO, IL — The driver that hit a 15-year-old bicyclist Wednesday at Route 31 and Washington Street was arrested and charged, Oswego police announced.
Officers were dispatched to the downtown intersection just after midnight Wednesday. A caller reported the vehicle involved left the scene and had last been seen driving north on Route 31.
About 20 minutes after the crash, Kendall County sheriff's deputies found a car matching the description in a parking lot off Harbor Drive. Shortly after, dispatch advised police that a woman called to report she struck a person on a bicycle, according to a news release.
The preliminary investigation determined Jasmine D. Smith, of Chicago, had been driving north on Route 31 near Washington Street when she hit the 15-year-old girl on a bike. The Oswego teenager was taken to Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora before she was transferred to Loyola University Medical Center for treatment, police said. Police said they do not have information about her condition.
Smith was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and driving while license suspended. She is due to appear in court Oct. 6.
As the investigation remains ongoing, police said the case will be reviewed for any additional charges.
