Democrat Jose Villagrana is leading Republican Bobby Richardson in the race for Kendall County sheriff, according to unofficial tallies from the county clerk's office.
Voters took to the polls Tuesday to choose a new sheriff after Dwight Baird, who was first elected to the role in 2014, did not seek reelection and instead endorsed Richardson, his longtime undersheriff.
With 72 of 78 precincts reporting as of 10:50 p.m., take a look at unofficial tallies from the Kendall County Clerk's Office:
Villagrana, a deputy who retired from the Kendall County Sheriff's Office after a 25-year law enforcement career, ran on a platform rooted in affordability and accountability.
Richardson, whose law enforcement career began in 2007 as a patrol deputy, served as undersheriff to Baird beginning in November 2019. He worked in patrol, investigations, community policing, corrections, undercover operations, supervision and command throughout his career.
Both candidates ran unopposed in the March primaries.
Election results are unofficial until certified by election authorities. This story will be updated as additional vote totals become available.
