Oswego Girl Scout Cadette Troop 4235 is collecting new socks to benefit Hesed House in Aurora from November 26 through January 7th. The scouts have placed collection baskets at various businesses throughout Oswego to gather donations from the community. This drive is part of a year-long project to provide Hesed House with socks of many different sizes and styles, to fit men, women, children, and even babies.
Many girls in their pre-teens may see the world primarily as a social circle, but the girls in this troop are learning to expand their viewpoint of the world to the community and beyond. They’ve learned that Hesed House is much more than a soup kitchen. It does provide food for those who need it, but it also provides shelter, clothing, education, medical assistance, and laundry facilities, among many other things. When the girls heard that between 150 and 200 people used Hesed House for shelter each night, including up to 20 children, they were moved to help.
“A lot of people have stereotypes about homeless people,” said troop member Audrey Mikelson, “but, really, anyone can lose their house. It can be someone you know, or even your family.” Socks are always in demand at Hesed House. The girls hope to collect at least one hundred pairs to donate.
