Oswego, Ill. (February 4, 2016) — Community Unit School District 308 athletes are learning early how to be a positive force for change and what it means to be good role models.

On Wednesday, January 20, 42 athletes and six coaches from all three levels of the Oswego East Girl’s Basketball Program participated in their second annual Feed My Starving Children event, in Aurora, Ill.

“All of the volunteers involved in the service event felt a sense of accomplishment and gratitude for the blessings they enjoy,” said Jeremy Main, Kinetics Wellness teacher at OEHS and coordinator of the volunteer effort for the basketball program. ”Each walked away with an even greater sense of concern toward those families and especially the children throughout the world who are without.”

During the hour-and-a-half volunteer effort, the athletes and coaches, along with the assistance of other volunteers, completed 136 boxes filled with Manna Rice Packs, a formula that consists of:

• Rice, the most widely consumed grain in the world
• Extruded soy nuggets, providing maximum protein at the lowest cost
• Vitamins, minerals, and a vegetarian flavoring to give growing children the critical nutrition they need
• Dehydrated vegetables for flavor and nutrition

A single Manna Rice Pack provides a highly nutritious meal for six children. The 136 completed boxes packed with Manna Rice Packs will provide 10,000 meals for hungry children and needy families throughout the world.

Founded in 1987, Feed My Starving Children is a non-profit organization committed to feeding hungry children with the help of volunteers, who hand-pack meals specially formulated for malnourished children. The organization sends the meals to partners around the world where they’re used to operate orphanages, schools, clinics, and feeding programs to break the cycle of poverty. Feed My Starving Children’s food has reached more than 70 countries worldwide.
