It's January... what have you resolved?

Thoughts on New Year's Resolutions.

As we approach the end of the January, I am always curious to see how people's New Year's Resolutions are coming along. Personally, I never make them because I prefer to start resolutions whenever I choose, no matter what the time of year. I have also found that any New Year's resolutions I have made are usually done by the end of January. Why is this? Because change is gradual, not absolute. Sure, there are always exceptions to the rule, and I'm sure we all know somebody who just decided to one day start (or stop) doing something and has never looked back, but for those of us who have tried and failed to start/stop a new habit, here is what I say.

If you decide you want to quit smoking, lose weight, start wearing make-up (my resolution), be kinder to strangers, then just do it. Don't wait until an arbitrary day tells you that you should start something new. Also know that it is going to take time. If you are the typical person, any sort of something new is going to take time. So introduce the new activity slowly into your life, taking on too much will most likely end up in failure. And always, if you don't meet your goal today, there is always tomorrow!
