MythBusters and Jesus

MythBusters and Jesus; sometimes the most basic things are just impossible.

A few months ago there was an absolutely hilarious MythBusters episode where the crew tested the theory that it is impossible to walk in a straight line blindfolded. They took it to the extreme, sight-canceling goggles, sound-canceling headphones, etc., so no outside influence could affect the walkers' ability to find a direction.  And the picture attached is roughly how the trajectories moved.

Equally hilarious to their ill-fated meanderings, when the walkers were interviewed, each described how well they felt they were doing, how straight they seemed to be moving, how on-target they thought they were during their circuitous path.  When they removed their goggles, they were stunned when they saw where they each had ended up!  Without their point of reference in focus, guiding, they simply could not stay on course.

And that, my friends, is what life is like.  Without a good point of reference, we flounder, wander, and spin.  We often want what is best for ourselves and our families, but, at best, we feel uncertain about what that actually looks like lived out. The human tragedy of it is that regardless of how we feel we are 'on target', our lives often end up looking like the picture.  And who wants to look back at the end of their days and reflect on a life of aimless circling?  "I worked too much.  I didn't really know my kids.  I never forgave my father.  I should have spent more time with my wife.  I should have been more kind to my husband."

The good news is that there is a simple and accessible guiding standard, Jesus. Jesus taught a paradigm-busting set of truths, establishing himself as a model of living that no one in the history of humanity has undone or superseded:

1. Love God
2. Love One Another
3. Do Not Judge

Regardless of religious practices, for 2000 years, no one has articulated human excellence better than this.  No one has defined and modeled "good-living" more clearly or succinctly, and no one has established a better paradigm for making real progress in life.

But I won't lie to you; it is not always easy to follow the Way.  It can seem nearly impossible to eat humble pie when in the wrong, and it can be grueling to extend yourself to others when selfish desires seem so urgent.  But there is nothing as rewarding as selflessness, and nothing as uplifting as living a life guided by sacrificial love.

Of course ultimately, as with all things, it is up to you.  You are completely free... free to roam, free to circle, free to meander, and you are free to wander off.  Or you can choose to take off the light-canceling goggles and take a closer look at the Way, the Truth and the Life.
