Oswego Family YMCA Commitment to Children

Oswego Family YMCA Preschool Program

So just how important is preschool  and preschool activities for younger children? What is your child going to learn in a preschool environment that is not being taught at home? Some parents feel strongly that a child can develop just being at home before heading off to the new world of kindergarten at age 5.

At the YMCA in Oswego we believe the chance for preschool-aged children to interact with other children is a key benefit of preschool in a nutshell but it is far more important than what those few words indicate. The Y is focused on youth development for children ages 2- 5yrs in every way possible.

Interacting with other children means learning how to wait, how to take turns, and how to listen. Young children learn social skills when they interact with other children. These social skills are critical to a developing personality and we do not dismiss them lightly.

There are other advantages to the YMCA preschool program–primarily that they are the foundations for academic learning. In preschool, your child will listen to poetry and songs-building blocks needed to grasp phonics and reading skills when it is developmentally appropriate.  The play that takes place with water, sand, and containers form the foundation for understanding some basic math concepts! Watching other children purse a challenging task is also helpful. The presence of other children and a wide variety  of materials are two big reasons why a preschool is such a big deal.

We at the Oswego Family YMCA believe preschool is beneficial and can do many things that will help children be successful when formal school begins, we also support the Fox Valley  United Way SPARK initiative that is compelled to help kids get off to their best start.

In addition to the Oswego Family YMCA preschool academy at our program center at Wheatland Salem church, the YMCA  offers a host of children’s skill classes in every sport so more motor learning is accomplished in a small group setting.
