Drivers serve a vital service to their communities, for in addition to delivering food, they are a link to the outside world. The elderly recipient of the meal may only see one person in a day, their meals on wheels driver. Drivers offer human contact and a wellbeing check. If ever they encounter a home where a senior does not answer, the driver has the ability to report back alerting senior services of a need to check in and potentially save a life.
Home delivered meal drivers choose their days of availability, and children are welcome to help too. It is a great learning experience to share a love for volunteerism with youngsters, and to make an impact in the lives of others through the simple act of kindness of bringing a meal.
