DUI Driver Found Illegally In Possession Of Firearm, Ammunition: Oswego Police

The New Jersey man was pulled over in Oswego when police found a firearm and ammunition in his reach in the vehicle, officials said.

OSWEGO, IL — An early Monday morning traffic stop resulted in felony charges against a 24-year-old man who was driving under the influence and illegally carrying a weapon, Oswego police said.

Oswego police pulled over the driver, identified as 24-year-old Johann Cruz, for speeding at about 1:24 a.m. Monday near Route 30 and Wolf Road. Officers determined the driver was driving under the influence, according to a news release.

During the investigation, officers also found a firearm and ammunition in Cruz's reach in the car, officials said.

Police said the man resides in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Kendall County jail records list his address on Front Street in Aurora.

The Kendall County State's Attorney's Office reviewed the case and approved the following charges against the man:

  • Two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol
  • Possession of a firearm without a FOID
  • Possession of ammunition without a FOID

In addition to the charges, police also issued several citations for speeding, operating a vehicle with suspended registration due to no insurance, and operating an uninsured vehicle.

Cruz was taken to the Kendall County jail. He was released following a detention hearing Monday morning.
