Re: Monthly PTO Mtg & Guest Speakers: Navigating Mental Health Needs

Mental health needs are becoming an increasing issue within our community. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) shares some startling statistics on their website.

  • Approximately 20% of youth ages 3-18 experience severe mental disorders in a given year. For ages 8-15, the estimate is 13%.
  • Almost ½ of youth ages 8-15 with a mental illness received no mental health services in the previous year.
  • ½ of all chronic mental illness begins by the age of 14.
  • Over 50% of students with a mental health condition age 14 and older who are served by special education drop out- the highest dropout rate of any disability group.

Prevention and awareness are crucial in trying to increase understanding and reduce the stigma of mental illness. EPEC 308 is proud to partner with NAMI DKK (DeKalb, Kane South and Kendall Counties) to hear about their education programs and support groups available for those affected by mental illness as well as their family members. Additionally, they will provide an overview of their educational programs available specifically for parents, teachers, and/or students. NAMI assists in equipping parents, staff and students with knowledge on how to care for those impacted by a mental illness.
