Gunshot During Welfare Check Prompts Shelter-In-Place Order: Oswego Police

OSWEGO, IL — Oswego police notified residents of "an active scene" with a heavy police presence in the 500 block of Colchester Drive just after 5:30 a.m. Friday, saying a shelter-in-place order was in effect.

Just before 7 a.m., more than an hour after the initial alert to the community, police said the shelter-in-place radius had been reduced from one mile to one-quarter mile around the location.

Police said officers remained on the scene after a report led them to conduct a welfare check at a home. Upon arrival, police said a gun was discharged inside the home. Only one person was believed to be inside the residence, and no injuries were reported.

As of just before 8 a.m., police remained at the scene, "actively working to safely resolve the situation."

Police said no District 308 schools are within the affected quarter-mile radius.

As of 9 a.m., the shelter-in-place order remained in effect, and residents were asked to continue to avoid the area.

"We will update with information when we can and/or will continue to provide hourly status updates," Oswego police said. "We understand residents may have questions, and appreciate their understanding that we are limited in the information we can provide while this remains an active incident. "
