Kendall County, IL (November 12, 2021, 11:30 AM)

The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office would like to recognize Deputy Brian Baird who retired on October 24, 2021, from the United States Army after nearly 21 years of service.  He began his military career as a Cavalry Scout in January of 2001.  After the attacks on September 11, 2001, he transitioned to Base and Airfield Security operations until leaving active duty in January 2003.

Deputy Baird then transitioned into the Illinois National Guard.  He was deployed to Iraq and was attached to a Military Police Unit as a Machine Gunner.  He spend 15 months in Iraq and acted as main supply route (MSR) patrol, traffic control point security, convoy security, and base security.

After completing his tour in Iraq, Deputy Baird joined the C Troop 2/106th Cavalry and acted as a Brigade Infantry Reconnaissance asset.

In 2008 Deputy Baird’s unit was activated for service in Afghanistan to act as combat advisors for Afghan Forces.  During his deployment to Afghanistan, he operated in the Nangahar and Helmand Provenances and participated in numerous combat tours acting as a Squad Leader for an Afghan Border Police Unit.

Upon returning from Afghanistan, Deputy Baird had the opportunity to travel to Germany and the Dominican Republic to act as an advisor in training special combat forces and was promoted to Team Leader.  In 2017 he earned the rank of Platoon Sergeant where he was responsible for command of his Platoon alongside the Platoon Leader.

In 2020 Deputy Baird’s unit was activated for the East African Response Force Horn of Africa mission.  His unit was responsible for responding anywhere in East and Central Africa where there was a threat to American assets.  His primary focus was American Embassies, where he would meet with the Ambassador and the Regional Security Officer and assess the Embassy’s security.  His assessment would be submitted to Command and his recommendations would be used to guide policymaking decisions.

During his 21-year career, Deputy Baird has earned numerous awards and accolades.  He is proud to retire as the longest active member of C TRP2/106th Cavalry, having marched in the first formation when the 106th Cavalry Regiment was established in October of 2005.  He said he is honored to have served his nation and is ready to move on to the next challenges that come his way.
