Kendall County Village Named Among Safest In The Country

OSWEGO, IL — When it comes to the best places to live, safety is often a big concern for potential homeowners.

Oswego, the largest village in Kendall County, ranks the 12th safest city in the United States, according to NeighborhoodScout. Compared to last year, Oswego jumped up from 86 into the top dozen spots.

Per 1,000 residents, Oswego has a total crime rate of 4.1, with 1 in 238 people having a chance of being a victim, according to NeighborhoodScout.

The company rated 100 cities with a population of over 25,000 based on the total number of property and violent crimes per 1,000 residents. Crimes accounted for included burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, murder, rape, armed robbery and aggravated assault.

Data used for the research included the number of total crimes reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the population of each city.

Ridgefield, Connecticut, came in first place as the safest in the country. The town, less than an hour outside Bridgeport, has a total crime rate of 1.9, with the chance of being a victim at 1 in 510.

"We are so lucky to work where we have the support of the Village and the community," police said in a post on Facebook. "Oswego is a safe town in large part due to our residents, and business owners, who care about their neighbors and the quality of life here in Oswego as much as we do."
