According to Community Nutrition Network Director Louise Maritato, there is always a great need for drivers to deliver lunches to isolated seniors. These volunteers would be matched to a local route of six to ten homes, in an area that could be canvased over a lunch hour. Most volunteers serve either weekly or monthly on their established route. They offer a friendly smile and a handshake, as they deliver a meal, but to family members and loved ones the delivery means so much more! It is really a well-being check that ensures that the isolated seniors is doing okay on that particular day.

The home delivered meal program is just one of the programs that volunteers can participate in. Senior Services Associates also assists seniors who are homebound with transportation options. Senior Services works closely with Kendall Area Transit, our local public transit company, but for those seniors who may need a little extra care or a companion to the doctor’s office, volunteer drivers may be asked to assist. These volunteers drive their own cars, and drivers over the age of 55 can qualify for mileage reimbursement. Individual appointment requests are handled on an individual basis according to need through Senior Services staff enlisting the help of volunteer drivers. Every volunteer must pass a national criminal background check. As there is such a high demand for transportation volunteers, Senior Services can only accommodate seniors in need to necessary appointments.
