Officer's Gun Accidentally Discharges During Oswego Traffic Stop: Police

Investigation under way after six-year veteran of the police department drew weapon, which inadvertently fired.

Oswego police are investigating after an officer inadvertently fired a service weapon during a traffic stop Tuesday night, Chief Dwight Baird said in a press release.

Police said at about 9:53 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the parking lot of a shopping center at 2800 Route 34 for speeding.

The car was occupied by three males, according to Baird, who said that while approaching the vehicle, the officer “observed an occupant of the vehicle make a lunging movement within the vehicle. The officer feared for their safety, drew their service weapon and while doing so inadvertently discharged the weapon one time.”
