OSWEGO, IL — A junior from Oswego East High School was crowned the winner of Rep. Lauren Underwood's 14th District 2023 Congressional High School Art Competition, officials announced.

A panel of district artists selected Kalae' Killingham's entry, "Wash Day," as the winner after reviewing entries submitted by local students from the 14th District, which includes Aurora, Batavia, Naperville and Plainfield, among others.

For the next year, Killingham's piece will be displayed next to the artworks from each district's winners at the United States Capitol building. On top of having her art viewed by the millions of people visiting the site, the student and a guardian will be flown out in July to Washington, D.C. where she will be recognized at the opening ceremony of the display.

The Congressional Institute sponsors the nationwide visual art competition each spring as a way to recognize and encourage talent, officials said. More than 650,000 students have participated in the program since its inception in 1982.

"Congratulations, Kalae', and keep inspiring us with your beautiful, artistic talent," Theresa Komitas, District 308's director of communications and public relations, wrote in a news release.
