Oswego East Scholastic Bowl Participates In Nationals For 1st Time

Over a three-day period in Atlanta, the Oswego East team faced various teams from across the nation to finish 6-8.

OSWEGO, IL — For the first time in school history, the Oswego East Scholastic Bowl team accepted an invitation to participate in the country's most prestigious quiz bowl tournament: the National Academic Quiz Tournaments National Championships.

Over a three-day period in Atlanta, the Oswego East team faced various teams from across the nation to finish 6-8, according to district officials. In the tournament, founded in 1996 by a group of former players, participants compete in a fast-paced buzzer competition to answer questions from categories including science, literature, current events and pop culture.

The high school team is comprised of the following students:

"It was a fitting send off for five of our seniors who graduated," varsity coach Cody Fleming said in a statement. "These five seniors have been in the program since they were freshmen, working hard, studying, and learning more information than they believed possible when they joined. Best of all, they felt as though they belonged there with the other best players and teams in the nation - because they did."

Teams can qualify for the High School National Championship Tournament by finishing in the top 15 percent on NAQT questions or by winning non-NAQT state championships.
