Oswego East Student Athlete of the Week-Nick Ubides

Senior Nick Ubides hopes the Wolves can carry their regular season momentum into the state tournament

Senior Nick Ubides understands what it takes to be successful. The boy’s tennis team rolled into this past week’s conference tournament with an overall record of 13-1. As captain, Nick has been a vocal leader in helping guide the Wolves, which is why he is this week’s Oswego East student athlete of the week.

Before his freshman year of high school, Nick had not played competitive tennis. As a quick learner, Nick rapidly improved to a position where he was not just a member of the program, but someone who would challenge opposing team’s best players. Head coach Scott Gengler understands just how hard Nick has worked over the past 4 years to reach this position, saying, “Nick has always been a leader on our team by having a positive attitude, being respectful to teammates and his coaches,” says Scott. He goes on to add, “Nick is also a very hard worker, despite not playing very much before high school.”

Nick is tasked with taking on some of the opposing team’s best as the number two singles player. His record at the #2 position was 7-2 in conference before last week’s conference tournament. He was also the Hawk Invite champion at the number 2 singles slot, helping lead the team to an overall championship.

Despite the team falling short of winning the conference tournament this past weekend, the Wolves were the regular season conference champions, and with the state tournament ahead, have an opportunity to add to their trophy case.

Nick’s maturation since his freshman year is not just something that helps him on the court, but has helped him in class and socially. Nick’s father, Julio Ubides, said, “I think Nick has become more mature and confident since his freshman year,” says Julio. He goes on to add, “[Nick] is more assertive and is not shy to talk to in front of people.”

Having finished his last day of high school only yesterday, Nick’s plans include majoring in business and attending Northern Illinois University. His Consumer Education teacher, Amy Regas, said, “I believe Nick will become successful in any are of business in his future.” As a future Huskie, Nick will have the advantage of working with one of the finer business schools in the state, and will no doubt use his work ethic to make the most of his opportunities.

As Nick looks back on his four years at East, he reminds those soon to be freshman Wolves to, “Work hard and try new things, as you will meet a lot of great new people.” As Nick moves on from high school to college, we wish him the best as he and his teammates look to make one more memory in the state tournament.
