Oswego Twp. Residents Share Opinions on Highway Commissioner

Some praised Gary Grosskopf, others condemned him.

Many people came out to the Oswego Township meeting to make their feelings known about Gary Grosskopf, the Oswego Township Highway Commissioner who has been spending most of his time in Florida despite being an elected official for the township.

According to a report from the Chicago Tribune, Supervisor Jim Detzler said there’s nothing he can do about Grosskopf and his penchant for staying out of town.

“That’s township law,” Detzler told the Tribune. “The taxpayers hired him, they have to fire him.”

Detzler did concede that the board could cut his salary.

Despite that, residents gave both negative and positive opinions of Grosskopf.

Oswego resident Diane Selmber said the attention brought on the township has made them a laughingstock.

“We’re all appalled by this,” she said. “It’s quite disturbing to me.”

Her opinions were shared by many at the meeting, according to the Tribune. But some praised Grosskopf and his job performance.

Ed Reuland, of Boulder Hill, said he’s been pleased with what Grosskopf’s been doing as commissioner.

“I think Mr. Grosskopf has been doing very well,” he said. “I’m for him 100 percent.”

Grosskopf did not respond to questions from reporters.
