OSWEGO, IL — Some championships get won on paper. This one got won in the dirt.

The Oswego White Sox are the first team in Oswego Baseball & Softball Association Little League history to win a 10U Minors championship, beating the Cardinals 13-4 at Oswego High School and closing out the Oswego Baseball & Softball Association's very first season as an officially chartered Little League program.

It almost didn't get that far. Two days before the championship, the White Sox were down 14-7 to the Rangers in the semifinal by the third inning, the kind of hole that ends most seasons. Instead, Oswego put together a seven-run fourth inning to tie it back up, and Lucas Lambrecht delivered a walk-off single to score Sawyer Dillman and send the team to the title game, 15-14.

The Cardinals showed up to the championship as the top seed, having finished the regular season 9-3 to the White Sox's 8-4. On paper, they had the edge. On the field, the White Sox took control early and didn't give it back. Good pitching, timely hitting, and a defense that kept making plays when it mattered.

Dillman got things going with a hot bat, reaching base all three times up and swiping three bases along the way. Trey Mengesha-Cribbs provided the exclamation point with a towering home run to deep center in the sixth, part of a 3-for-4 day with two RBIs. Angelo Tsatsafoulis added two hits and two RBIs of his own, then made the defensive play of the game, a perfect laser throw to Dillman from the outfield that erased a Cardinals runner at home plate.

Phoenix Singletary set the tone on the mound with eight strikeouts over the first three innings, then Lambrecht came in and shut the door with five more strikeouts to finish it off. Noah Nilsen drove in two runs in the middle innings, Jacob Doss added an RBI double and turned a big double play later in the game, and Dayton Jakobson-Muscato kept getting on base to keep the pressure on. Brody Doy and Carson Stoppel both had their fingerprints on the win too, whether it was on the bases or in the field.

Give credit to the Cardinals, too. They didn't back down, finishing with 11 hits, eight stolen bases, and a home run of their own from Silas S in the sixth. It just wasn't quite enough.

Final score: White Sox 13, Cardinals 4.

There's a bigger story here beyond one game. This year, OBSA officially became a Little League International program and joined the Little League Central Region, which means Oswego baseball now has a real path forward. Starting at the district level and continuing on to sectionals, state, regionals, and eventually the Little League World Series.

Let the memories begin! Welcome to Little League!

OBSA summed it up well on social media after the final out:

"Congratulations to the Oswego White Sox on becoming the first-ever Oswego Little League Minors Champions! The runner-up Cardinals had an outstanding season from beginning to end, earning the #1 seed in the playoffs before coming up short in the Championship. We congratulate the White Sox, the Cardinals and all of the Oswego Little League Minors players, coaches and families on an exciting season"
