6th Grade Game Summary

Coming off a disappointing loss the previous weekend, the OYTF 6th grade Orange football team was hungry for a win against the Neuqua Valley Wildcats. After an unexpected 1.5 hour wait in the late summer heat Oswego started strong on offense. QB Andrew Karsten led his running backs, including Devin White for a steady march up the field on their first offensive drive. The running backs gained yards on every run because of stellar blocking by the O Line, including Dalton Platt, Declan Auton, Bryce Woods, Taiden Thomas, Ben Pavlick, Ryan Pass, Aidan Mackniskas, Brandon Becker & Joey Abdallah. With 10 yards to go late in the first, Grif Brown set the final block clearing the way for Will Bass to sweep into the end zone.

A few offensive & defensive series later, Johnny Cannavino faked out the Wildcat cornerback and went long. QB Andrew Karsten connected with the long pass and Johnny was gone for a touchdown. On the following kickoff Mike Mellas sped across and dove on the onsides kick, setting up another offensive run. After several long runs by Devin White, Colin O’Grady punched through the middle to make the score 20-0.

On defense, the Oswego team showed that if there is one thing the boys learned from the loss last weekend, it was to tackle low. Play after play on defense, cornerbacks Owen Carlson & Grant Zegar stopped the sweeps while Abe Hansen sacked the QB when he came near. Defensive Backs William Mattson, Finn Anderson, Noah Vera, Peyton Hammond, & Colin O’Grady kept the gains low up the middle. Marco Bellanca penetrated the through the Wildcat offensive line and took down anyone within arms reach. The Wildcats did made steady advances up the field, and twice made it in to the red zone, but the defense, including several of the newly welcomed players, Matthew Kinley, Miguel Rivera, Andrew Phillips, Carter Russell, Chase Morgan, Cayden Mast, kept the pressure on, preventing any scores.

After the second week of the recently combined teams, this squad is coming together again, and ready for Yorkville next weekend.
