Loaded Gun Found In OEHS Student's Backpack: Oswego Police

A 15-year-old boy was arrested and charged with multiple felonies after a loaded gun was found in his backpack Tuesday at school.

OSWEGO, IL — A loaded firearm was found in an Oswego East High School student's backpack Tuesday, prompting a police investigation, officials said.

School staff notified police at about 10 a.m. that a student had turned over a backpack containing the weapon after another student left the bag with a classmate, according to a news release.

Police confiscated the gun and began an investigation, determining the student had no intention to harm students or staff.

"There are no current concerns for the safety of students or staff," officials said in their original alert on Facebook.

The owner of the backpack, a 15-year-old boy, was taken into custody and charged with multiple offenses:

  • three felony counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon
  • one felony count of unlawful use of a weapon
  • one misdemeanor count of unauthorized storage/possession of a weapon

The boy was brought to the Oswego Police Department where he was processed and transported to the Kane County jail to await a hearing.

“The Oswego Police Department would like to thank the students who reported it and came forward to say something,” officials said in a news release. “Oswego Police take all reports of student safety seriously and are dedicated to ensuring they are handled swiftly and appropriately.”
