Rep. Foster Commemorates Anniversary of Medicare, Calls On Congress To Preserve Medicare For Future Generations

Washington, D.C.—Today, Congressman Bill Foster (IL-11) released the following statement commemorating the 48th anniversary of Medicare:

“When President Lyndon Johnson signed Medicare into law 48 years ago today, only half of American seniors had access to health insurance. Since then, Medicare has fundamentally improved access to health care for millions of seniors and become a crucial safety net for seniors living on a fixed income.

“As he signed Medicare into law, President Johnson thanked those who had secured its passage by noting that it takes a special type of person to see past political battles and recognize the injustice of denying medical care to the old and poor. These words still ring true today.
