Residents To Enjoy Socially-Distanced Memorial Day Cookout

The Front-Yard-A-Cue cookout on May 25 aims to fill the whole block with sights, sounds and smells of summer.

OSWEGO, IL — The global pandemic has made a traditional Memorial Day weekend celebration difficult this year, but the Village of Oswego is asking residents to reclaim the holiday with the Front-Yard-A-Cue cookout.

People are encouraged to plan their typical Memorial Day weekend cookouts, but move their grills and the picnic tables to the front yard from 4-7 p.m. Monday, May 25.

"Wave 'hi' to the neighbors, swap grilling tips and techniques from a safe social distance, and fill the whole block with the sights, sounds and smells of summer – from grilled meats to kids running through the sprinklers," the village said in a press release.

Residents can take photos of the celebrations and enter the contest on social media to win a gift basket of goodies from local Oswego businesses. Prizes will be awarded to two winners in each of the categories below:

  • Most Local Oswego BBQ: Grill some brats from Sage’s or get your BBQ ready to eat from Piggy’s, wash it down with a growler from Oswego Brewing or bottle from Fox Valley Winery, or deck out the tables with flowers from Floral Expressions or table décor from Velvet Grace. Pick up curbside or get delivery from a local business, snap a photo of your celebration, and tag the Oswego-based independent businesses represented in your photo.
  • Most Patriotic Front Yard: This year’s Memorial Day parade may have been canceled, but Oswego still salutes the men and women who have given their lives in service to the country. Deck your tables or yard with blue, white and red.

To enter, post your photos to Facebook or Instagram, and tag them #OswegoTogether6ftApart.
