Save Money and Go Green for Prom With Reused Dresses

Save money and reuse by purchasing a prom dress from a resale shop or thrift store.

Looking for a way to go green (and not the green that involves cash) and get ready for prom? The answer is pretty simple.

A big part of the Go Green movement is reusing items so they don’t go to waste.  And what better to reuse than a prom dress?

“Most of these dresses are only worn once for just a couple of hours,” said co-owner of Savvy Fashions and More Dawn Aagesen. “We want to be able to recycle some of these prom dresses and accessories.”

Aagesen says dresses at the resale shop go as low as $40 and up to about $250 depending on the original price as well as make and condition.

“Girls are easily dropping a thousand dollars now between the dress and the shoes and hair and make up,” said Nancy Tyl, co-owner. “Our options are much more affordable.”

Resale shops, like Savvy Fashions and More, also consign prom dresses for those looking to make some money and find a new use for their dress.

“They’re too pretty to hang in your closet for decades,” said Tyl. “Someone else would likely enjoy it.”

Savvy Fashions sells the dress and the consigner earns 40 percent of the profit.

That’s not to mention re-using shoes, jewelry or even clutches.

“We have some real vintage clutches and jewelry,” said Aagesen. “They’ve really become popular again.”

The shop is hoping to have a fashion show, possibly through one of the high schools, to show some of their many dresses in the store and bring awareness to reusing and reselling dresses.

Customers who purchase a prom dress through Savvy Fashions and more also get 10 percent off all accessories for their outfit.
